Congratulations to Jay Gobrecht, our local athlete.
Jay will compete for his first U.S. Disc Golf Championship title. Jay
finished second at the PA State Disc Golf Championships here at
Codorus.
Pennsylvania State Disc Golf Championships were held on June 5 at Gifford Pinchot with the final rounds being played at Codorus State Park on June 6. 109 athletes competed in this even ranging in age from 15 to 75.
Like a lot of other people, I never realized how complex the sport of Disc Golf is. From the varies types of equipment (like the drivers, putters and the targets themselves) to the technical side of throwing the discs. Disc golf is played like regular golf except for using clubs and a ball, you throw a Frisbee-like disc. Score is kept like traditional golf -- the winner is determined by the number of strokes or throws. The competitor with the least throws wins. Disc Golf formally began in the 1970's. There are over 2000 courses in the U.S.. People of all ages can play disc golf. It's a healthy sport and easy to learn.
